Storybook Champions

Storybook Champions is a community‑driven, early‑literacy program developed to place trained volunteers in public preschool and early‑elementary classrooms to read aloud to children aged 3-7 on a regular basis. The program builds vocabulary, background knowledge, attention skills, imagination and a love of stories -- all essential components of school readiness and early reading success.

Volunteers become trusted literacy role models, helping young children experience books as joyful, social and meaningful.

Storybook Champions prioritizes communities where school readiness indicators show the greatest need, ensuring equitable access to fun-filled, high‑quality reading experiences.

Pilot programs during the 2026/27 school year are planned at Charles City Elementary in Charles City County and Wayne Hills Preschool Center in Waynesboro.
